Originally the Caf\u00e9 was called Regina d&#8217;Ungheria (the Queen of Hungary), when Venice was subject to the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; it was later named Orso Coronato (the Crowned Bear), due to the picturesque sign depicting a bear with a crown on its head, standing on its hind legs. At that time, the Venetians called it Caff\u00e8 dei Foresti (the Foreigners&#8217; Caf\u00e9), because it was frequented by a mainly international clientele and was the meeting place in the Square for anyone who did not know how to orient themselves among the Venetian calli (i.e. alleys). For this reason, the codegas, gondoliers, dry land porters and those who guaranteed transportation in the city, especially in the evenings, stationed themselves outside the caf\u00e9. They accompanied the foreign clients of the Lavena to their homes, through the dark meanderings of the Venetian canals, by the light of their typical hand-held lanterns. The codegas, in effect, may be considered the first tourist guides with an international clientele in the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"height:500px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>\n<p>Today, the Caff\u00e9 Lavena is on the Italian Historical Places of Italy, with its precious furnishings and magic atmosphere, which still exists inside and outside the caf\u00e9, where guests are invited to experience the illustrious past and the popular traditions of Venice, among the tables that face the mosaics of St. Mark&#8217;s Basilica.<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>But it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pursang.graphics\/clients\/lavena\/en\/carlo-lavena-en\/\">Carlo Lavena<\/a>, who bought the caf\u00e9 in 1860, that gave prestige to this &#8220;coffee boutique&#8221;. He changed the name of the business, but was wise enough to preserve the architecture and refined furnishings of previous ages. Thanks to his personality and culture, a wide circle of artists and musicians were attracted to the Caf\u00e9, including the great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pursang.graphics\/clients\/lavena\/en\/the-cafe-of-wagner-musicians-and-writers\/\">Richard Wagner<\/a>. Additionally, thanks to his fame as a baker, he made the Caf\u00e9 famous even abroad, exporting his sweets throughout Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"height:500px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Today, the Caff\u00e9 Lavena is on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.localistorici.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Italian Historical Places of Italy<\/a>, with its precious furnishings and magic atmosphere, which still exists inside and outside the caf\u00e9, where guests are invited to experience the illustrious past and the popular traditions of Venice, among the tables that face the mosaics of St. Mark&#8217;s Basilica<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/locali_storici.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When you cross the threshold, the Caff\u00e9 Lavena appears immediately as it did in the eighteenth century, when they called it the Queen of Hungary. The green marble tables and chairs in wood and velvet, the same ones that accommodated Wagner and the many illustrious guests, introduce the atmosphere of an Austrian-style salon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/interni-specchi-lavena.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>Carlo-Lavena<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The antique mirrors<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The antique eighteenth century mirrors, which have been miraculously handed down to our own day, evoke the important past of the Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_6957.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>The glass chandelier<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The glass chandelier, a masterpiece of the artist glassblowers of Murano Barovier andToso, dominates the centre of the lodge. The characteristic that makes it unique is the grandiose decoration with Moor heads, which is reminiscent of Venice&#8217;s cosmopolitan vocation during the period of he Serenissima Republic, a meeting place for peoples from all over the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_6981_S.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>Eighteenth century wooden panels<\/h2>\n<div>On the upper floor, which is lined in characteristic eighteenth century wooden panels, lacquered with pure gold borders of the age and decorated with Venetian blown glass wall lamps in the same design as the majestic chandelier, guests may enjoy a privileged vantage point from which to admire the pulsating heart of Venice, through the windows that face the centre of St.
